Two days tour in Moscow ver.1

The 1st day: Moscow sightseeing tour with a car:

The tour starts with visiting Red Square which has always been a place of political, religious and cultural significance. This is where “the Sacred War” Victory Day parades are annually held. On Red Square you will see towers and walls of the Kremlin, the most famous church of Russia - St Basil’s Cathedral, which colorful look was compared to the scales of a golden fish, the monument to Russian heroes Minin and Pozharsky, the Lenin Mausoleum, the State Historical Museum. You will also enjoy magnificent architecture of the GUM Department Store; its interiors are absolutely great.

Going along the Moscow River you will see the largest and the most important cathedral of Modern Russia - the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. This is where the head of the State prays. From the Patriarch bridge which is right behind the Cathedral you will enjoy panorama of the Kremlin and observe the monument to Peter the Great – the founder of Saint Petersburg.

To have an idea where the Romanov tsars used to pray you will take a look at one of the most famous monasteries of Russia – the Novodevichiy Convent. It was founded in the 16th century and has a faire-tale look. The Convent was very rich in historical, political and literal events and associations. 

Right beyond the convent’s south wall is located the fascinating Novodevichy Cemetery, where many famous writers, artists, outstanding politicians and military heroes are buried. Among them are Anton Chekhov, Mikhail Bulgakov, Sergei Prokofiev, Raisa Gorbacheva, Boris Yeltsin, Nikita Khrushchev. It is the second one in the rank of the most prestigious burial places after the burial on Red Square.   

The Novodevichiy convent is located not far from the Sparrow Hill - the highest place of Moscow and the best one to observe the whole city from. You will be impressed with the Moscow State University main building which dominates the plateau. From there you will see the legendary Luzhniki Stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics of 1980 took place.

On the way to the Hill of Greetings you will see the complex of Moscow film studios – Mosfilm. This is where such famous Soviet directors as Sergey Eisenstein and Andrey Tarkovsky made their epochal films.

Approaching the Victory Park you will see a memorial complex dedicated to the Soviet victory in World War II and to heroes of different religions and confessions. The Memorial complex includes a church, a mosque and a synagogue; an obelisk “Sword” which is one of the highest obelisks in the World and the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War. 

In the beginning of the Victory Park you are going to see the Arch of Triumph which was erected to glorify the victory of Russia over French usurper Napoleon. It is located on Kutuzovskiy Avenue, named after Field-Marshal Kutuzov – the winner of Napoleon.  Elegantly adorned Stalinist-time buildings along both sides of  the road were erected as apartment blocks for famous people of the country, among them were members of the Soviet Government, diplomats, top scientists, members of Cultural élite. Going along Kutuzovskiy Avenue you will also notice one of the legendary Stalinist sky-scrapers – the hotel Ukraine. The hotel faces the Write House of the Government with the Russian flag on the top.

Passing along a wide street - the New Arbat, you will have chance to compare Stalinist architecture to what was built by his follower. Grey sky-scrapers flanked the road were built in the time of Nikita Khrushchev.

Reaching the Moscow Boulevard Ring Road you will go along it and see the Tverskoy Boulevard where the greatest poet of Russia Alexander Pushkin used to come to. One of the most famous Moscow restaurants Café Pushkin is also located there. Then you will find yourself  in Tverskaya Street – the main street of the country, straight road to the North.

Lunch (optional)

A walking tour along a famous pedestrian street – the Old Arbat. It is one of the most popular places of Moscow with nice cafes, souvenir shops, beautiful houses and monuments to people who used to live here.  

The 2nd day:

The Kremlin tour: The Kremlin is a historic and spiritual heart not only of Moscow but of the whole country. All Russian history, its tragedies and triumphs are associated with this medieval fortress – the Kremlin. It is a mixture of European and Asiatic splendor, with the elegance of Italian Renaissance and brightness and brilliance of Byzantium.

Inside the ancient walls of the Kremlin you will see the largest bell in the World - the Tsar-Bell, the largest cannon in the World – the Tsar-Cannon, the 15th century cathedrals of the Kremlin, among them The Assumption Cathedral where all ceremonies of coronation of Russian tsars and emperors and solemn acts of the country took place; the Archangel Michael Cathedral which is the burial place of Moscow grand princes and Russian tsars;  the Annunciation Cathedral which was a domestic church of the grand princes and tsars. The Cathedrals are still decorated with marvelous murals from inside and contain ancient icons.

There are also two museums inside the Kremlin which you can visit. The first museum is the Armory Chamber, it displays the tsars’ coronation dresses, state regalia, royal carriages, ceremonial armory and weapons, the Faberge Easter eggs. The second museum is called the State Diamond Fund and it represents the most valuable gems of Russia, the Royal regalia, platinum and golden nuggets.  Both museums are located int the same building.

State Tretyakov Gallery: The State Tretyakov Gallery is a museum which houses the greatest collection of  Russian Art in the world, including a unique collection of icons, dating back to the 11th – 18th centuries.

It is interesting that the founder of the collection Pavel Tretyakov was a merchant. He was very fond of Russian painting and spent a lot of time searching and then buying canvases of the most talented Russian artists. Later he presented his collection to the city of Moscow. That is why the museum is named after its founder.
